Method
Prepare Glass & Mint
- 1
Add mint and lime
Place 10 fresh mint leaves and the 1 oz fresh lime juice into a sturdy highball or Collins glass (or a mixing glass if you prefer to build in a separate vessel).
- 2
Add simple syrup
Pour 0.75 oz simple syrup over the mint and lime in the glass to help release the oils from the mint more evenly.
- 3
Muddle gently
Using a muddler, gently press and twist the mint leaves and lime — about 6–8 gentle presses. Goal is to bruise the mint to release aroma and oils without shredding it (which can make the drink bitter).
Add Spirits & Ice
- 4
Add rum
Add 2 oz white rum to the glass with the muddled mint and lime.
- 5
Top & Stir
- 6
Top with soda
Pour 2 oz (about a splash) of club soda over the ice to fill and lift the flavors. You can add more to taste to reach your preferred dilution and fizz.
- 7
Stir gently
Using a long bar spoon, gently stir the drink 4–6 times from top to bottom to combine rum, lime, syrup and soda without tearing up the mint leaves.
Finish & Serve
- 8
Garnish
Slap a sprig of mint between your hands to bloom the aroma and place it on top of the drink. Garnish with a lime wedge or wheel on the rim.
- 9
Optional bitters
If using, add 1 dash of Angostura bitters on top for a subtle aromatic note.
- 10
Serve
Serve immediately with a straw and enjoy. Encourage sipping through the mint for full flavor.
