Coffee Base

Method

Prepare

1

Warm cup

Pour the reserved hot water into a large heatproof mug or Irish coffee glass to warm it. Let sit 30 seconds, then discard the water.

2

Brew coffee

Brew 2 cups of strong, hot coffee (use a bit more coffee grounds than usual or a French press) so it is fresh and steaming.

Assemble Beverage

3

Add Amaretto (1.5 tbs), brandy (1 tbs), and the optional brown sugar (1 tsp) into the warmed mug. Stir briefly to dissolve sugar.

4

Pour 1.75 to 2 cups of the hot brewed coffee into the mug over the liqueurs, leaving about 1/4 cup space at the top for cream. Stir gently to combine.

Finish & Garnish

5

Lightly whip 2 tablespoons of heavy cream until it just thickens and pours slowly (or use store whipped cream). Spoon or float the cream on top of the coffee so it forms a distinct layer.

6

Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon grated dark chocolate or a dusting of cocoa powder over the cream. If desired, garnish with a single whole almond or a few toasted almond slivers.

7

Serve immediately while hot. Stir through the cream with the first sips if you prefer a combined drink.
