Toast

Method

Toast

  1. 1

    Toast bread

Place the 2 slices of bread in a toaster and toast to your preferred level (medium golden is recommended, about 2–3 minutes depending on toaster).

  2. 2

    Butter toast

Immediately after toasting, spread 1 teaspoon of unsalted butter evenly over each slice so it melts into the toast.

Baked beans

  1. 3

    Warm beans on stovetop

Pour 1 cup of canned baked beans into a small saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons of water to loosen the sauce and 1 teaspoon olive oil or butter if desired. Warm over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until simmering gently and heated through, about 4–6 minutes.

  2. 4

    Season

Taste the beans and season with up to 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt as needed. If you like a tangy or spicier flavor, stir in 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce now. Keep warm on the lowest heat while you finish the toast.

  3. 5

    Alternative microwave method

Transfer beans to a microwave-safe bowl, stir in the 2 tablespoons water, cover loosely, and microwave on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, stir, then microwave another 30 seconds if needed until hot. Season as above.

Assembly & finish

  1. 6

Divide the warmed beans evenly between the two buttered slices of toast, spooning them on top so each slice has a generous layer.

  2. 7

If using cheese, sprinkle about 1 tablespoon (2 tbs total) grated cheddar evenly over the hot beans so it melts slightly. Finish with a light sprinkle of chopped parsley or chives for freshness.

  3. 8

Serve immediately while hot. Optional: offer extra black pepper, hot sauce or salt at the table.
