Dry Ingredients

Method

Dry Ingredients

  1. 1

    Measure dry ingredients

Measure 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, 1/4 cup raisins, 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Place them near the stove so everything is ready.

Cooking Oatmeal

  1. 2

Combine liquids and bring to a simmer

In a medium saucepan, combine 1.5 cups milk and 1/2 cup water. Add 1 teaspoon unsalted butter. Warm over medium heat until the liquid is steaming and small bubbles form around the edge (do not boil vigorously).

  2. 3

    Add oats and simmer

Stir in the measured 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 7 minutes until the oats have absorbed most of the liquid and reached a creamy consistency. Stir more frequently in the last 1–2 minutes to prevent sticking.

  3. 4

    Add raisins and brown sugar

About 1 minute before the oats are done (while still hot on the stovetop), stir in 1/4 cup raisins and 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar so the raisins plump and the sugar dissolves into the oats.

  4. 5

    Finish with vanilla and butter

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract and the remaining 1 teaspoon butter until melted and incorporated. Taste and adjust sweetness, adding up to 1 tablespoon additional brown sugar if desired.

Serving & Toppings

  1. 6

    Prepare banana

Slice 1 ripe banana into rounds or half-moons. If you prefer warmed banana, gently toss the banana slices into the hot oatmeal and let sit for 30–60 seconds to warm and soften.

  2. 7

    Serve

Ladle the oatmeal into a bowl. Top with the sliced banana. If desired, sprinkle an extra tablespoon of brown sugar and a pinch of salt over the top to enhance flavor. Serve immediately while warm.
