Method
Toast Base
Butter the bread (optional skillet method)
Lightly spread up to 1 tablespoon unsalted butter on one side of each bread slice if you want a golden, crisp exterior. This step is optional if you prefer plain dry-toasted bread.
Toast the bread
Skillet: place bread butter-side-down in the hot skillet and toast 2–3 minutes until golden, then flip and toast the other side 1–2 minutes until done. Toaster: toast on medium until golden and crisp (about 2–4 cycles depending on your toaster). Broiler/oven: place on a baking sheet and broil 1–2 minutes per side, watching closely to avoid burning.
Topping Options (choose one)
Fig jam
Spoon 1 tablespoon of fig jam onto each slice of warm toast and spread evenly with a knife to the edges. If desired, drizzle a scant 1 teaspoon of honey over the jam and finish with a tiny pinch (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) of sea salt flakes to enhance flavor.
Butter
While the toast is still warm, spread 1/2 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter evenly over each slice so it melts into the bread. Optionally grate 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon zest over the butter for brightness.
Peanut butter
Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on each warm slice so it softens and becomes easy to cut. For a touch of contrast, drizzle 1 teaspoon honey over the peanut butter or sprinkle a tiny pinch of sea salt flakes.
Finishing
Cut the toast in half on the diagonal or leave whole, transfer to a plate, and serve immediately while warm. Provide a fork and knife if the toast is heavily topped or for neat eating.
