Garlic Butter

Finishing (optional)

Method

Prepare Garlic Butter

  1. 1

    Soften and mix

Remove the butter from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature about 15–20 minutes until soft enough to spread. If short on time, microwave in 5–7 second bursts until just softened (do not melt).

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a small bowl, add the softened butter, olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley, grated Parmesan (if using), salt, black pepper, and lemon zest (if using). Mix thoroughly with a fork or small spatula until evenly combined and slightly whipped, scraping the bowl sides so garlic and herbs are distributed.

Prepare Bread

  1. 3

    Preheat oven

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the center of the oven.

  2. 4

    Split the loaf

Place the 8-inch loaf on a cutting board. Using a serrated knife, slice the loaf lengthwise into two even halves so you have two long pieces with the crumb exposed.

  3. 5

    Apply garlic butter

Using a butter knife or offset spatula, spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the cut sides of both bread halves, covering to the edges. Use all the butter for a rich result; reserve a tablespoon if you prefer less.

  4. 6

    Optional cheese topping

If using mozzarella, sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the buttered cut sides. For a spicy touch, sprinkle red pepper flakes to taste.

Bake and Finish

  1. 7

    Bake

Place the buttered bread halves cut-side-up on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment for easy cleanup. Bake in the preheated oven for 8–12 minutes, until the butter is melted and the edges start to turn golden.

  2. 8

    Broil for color (optional)

For a crisp, browned top, switch oven to broil and broil on high for 1–2 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning. Remove when the cheese (if used) is bubbly and lightly browned.

  3. 9

    Rest and slice

Remove the garlic bread from the oven and let it rest 1–2 minutes. Use a serrated knife to slice into 1–1.5 inch pieces for serving.

  4. 10

    Serve

Serve warm as a side with pasta, soup, or as an appetizer. Leftovers can be reheated in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 6–8 minutes.
