Candle Wax & Additives

Method

Candle Wax & Additives

1

Prepare Work Area

Clean and clear a heat-resistant work surface. Lay down newspaper or silicone mat. Ensure good ventilation and keep children/pets away.

2

Measure Wax

Weigh 1.25 lbs soy wax flakes and 0.25 lbs coconut/soy-blend wax. Combine in the double boiler or pouring pot. If using a scale in ounces, this equals approximately 24 oz total wax (20 oz soy + 4 oz coconut).

3

Melt Wax

Set the pot over gently simmering water (double boiler). Stir occasionally until fully melted and clear. Use thermometer and bring to 170°F–185°F (77°C–85°C) depending on wax manufacturer recommendations. Remove from heat once fully melted.

4

Add Additives & Color

If using wax hardener or stearic acid, add 1 tbs now and stir until dissolved. Add 1 tsp vybar if using. Add wax dye or mica (about 1 tsp), stirring until evenly distributed and color is consistent.

Fragrance & Color

5

Cool to Fragrance Temperature

Allow the melted wax to cool to the recommended fragrance addition temperature — typically 135°F–150°F (57°C–66°C) for soy blends. Use the thermometer to monitor.

6

Measure and add 1 oz of candle-safe fragrance or essential oil (roughly 6%–8% fragrance load for a 10 oz candle). Pour the oil slowly into the melted wax and stir gently but thoroughly for 1–2 minutes to ensure full integration and even scent distribution.

7

If you want decorative dried botanicals or cosmetic glitter on the surface, have them measured (1 tsp) and ready to sprinkle after initial set; do NOT mix botanicals into wax (fire risk).

Wicks & Containers

8

Prepare Container

Wipe the inside of the glass jar with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth to remove dust and oils. Let it evaporate completely.

9

Attach Wick

Affix the metal wick tab of the selected wick to the center of the jar bottom. Press firmly so it adheres. If the tab does not have adhesive, use a small drop of hot glue to secure. Make sure the wick is straight and centered.

10

Position Wick

Use a wick-centering device, chopstick, or pencil laid across the jar mouth to hold the wick upright and centered. Tuck the wick around the device to keep it taut.

11

Pour Wax

When fragrance is fully incorporated and the wax is at pouring temp (usually 130°F–145°F / 54°C–63°C for soy blends), slowly pour the wax into the prepared jar, leaving about 1/4" headspace at the top. Pour steadily to minimize air bubbles.

12

Top-up Pour (if sinkhole forms)

If the wax develops a sinkhole around the wick as it cools, reserve a small amount of warmed wax at pouring temperature to top up. Reheat the reserved wax gently and pour a thin layer to level the surface once the candle has mostly set but is still tacky (about 30–60 minutes after initial pour).

Finishing & Safety

13

Add Surface Decorations

Once the candle surface is mostly set but still slightly tacky, sprinkle a small pinch of dried botanicals or cosmetic-grade glitter on the top if desired. Keep any decorations away from the wick to avoid fire hazards.

14

Cure

Allow the candle to cure undisturbed at room temperature for at least 24–48 hours. For best scent throw, cure for 1–2 weeks before burning, especially with soy wax blends.

15

Trim Wick & Label

Trim the wick to about 1/4" (6 mm) above the wax before the first burn. Add any label or sticker to the bottom of the jar if desired.

16

Safety Notes

Always burn on a heat-resistant surface. Keep candle away from drafts, flammable objects, children and pets. Do not leave burning candle unattended. Extinguish if flame becomes too large or wick mushrooming occurs. If using botanicals, never let them contact the flame.
