Frozen Martini Base

Method

Frozen Martini Base

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a blender, add 3 oz gin or vodka, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, and 2 cups of ice. If you prefer a slightly sweeter frozen martini, add 0.25 tsp simple syrup. For an orange-leaning variation, add 0.25 oz orange liqueur instead of some or all of the vermouth.

  3. 3

    Blend

Secure the lid and pulse on high for 10–15 seconds, then blend continuously for 10–20 seconds until the ice is finely crushed and the mixture is thick but pourable. If the mixture is too slushy, add 0.25 oz more spirit and blend briefly; if too thin, add a few more ice cubes and pulse until desired consistency.

  4. 4

    Taste and adjust

Taste a small spoonful (or dilute with a little water on the spoon if you prefer) and adjust sweetness or spirit level: add up to 0.25 tsp more simple syrup for sweetness, or a splash more vermouth (0.125–0.25 oz) if you want a brighter herbal note. Pulse once to combine any additions.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 5

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer. If using a lemon twist, cut a 1-inch strip of lemon peel, twist it over the drink to express oils, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the glass. If using an olive, thread one green olive on a cocktail pick and rest it in the glass.

  2. 6

Pour the blended martini into the chilled glass, filling to about 1/8 inch from the rim. Serve immediately with a short straw or as-is.

  3. 7

Optional: For a decorative flourish, lightly grate a touch of lemon zest over the top or float a thin cucumber slice on the surface for the cucumber variation.
