Primary

Method

Primary

  1. 1

    Chill glass

If you prefer the cocktail well-chilled, place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the drink.

  2. 2

    Combine spirits

Measure 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) of Cognac or brandy and 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) of Bénédictine. Pour both into a mixing glass or a shaker tin.

  3. 3

    Stir with ice

Add 3 large ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently for 20–30 seconds with a bar spoon until the mixture is well-chilled and slightly diluted (about 10–15% dilution). If you prefer the drink served neat and simply warmed, skip stirring and serve without ice.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard ice/water from the chilled serving glass if used. Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (or the shaker's built-in strainer), strain the mixed B & B into the chilled coupe or rocks glass.

Garnish & finish

  1. 5

Express oils from a lemon or orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a quick snap so the oils spray onto the drink. Rub the rim with the peel if desired, then drop the twist into the glass as a garnish.

  2. 6

Serve immediately. Optionally, for a warmer, sweeter presentation, serve the measured spirits neat in a warmed snifter without chilling or dilution.
