- 1
Preheat and prepare
Preheat your cup by rinsing it with hot water, then discard the rinse water. This helps keep the Americano hot longer.
- 2
Dose and tamp
Weigh out 18 g of freshly ground coffee (espresso grind). Distribute evenly in the portafilter, then tamp with consistent pressure to create a flat, even puck.
- 3
Brew espresso
Lock the portafilter into a heated espresso machine and brew 60 ml of espresso (double shot). Aim for a total extraction time of about 25–30 seconds. Adjust grind size or dose if extraction time is far from this range.

Heat dilution water
While the espresso is brewing (or immediately after), heat 90 ml of fresh water to about 85–95°C (185–203°F). If using a kettle, let boiling water sit ~30 seconds to reach this range.
- 5
Combine
Pour the 60 ml of freshly brewed espresso into the preheated cup, then add the 90 ml of hot water. Add the hot water to the espresso (traditional method) or pour the espresso over the water (reverse method) depending on taste preference. Stir gently to combine.

Notes on variations
For a stronger Americano, reduce the dilution water to 60–75 ml. For a longer/roomier cup, increase dilution water to 120–150 ml. Use a single shot (30 ml) for a weaker base, adjusting water proportionally.
