Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill the mug

Place the copper mule mug in the freezer for 5–10 minutes prior to building the drink, or fill it with ice and let sit while you prepare the other components so the mug gets frosty.

  2. 2

Measure 2 oz vodka into a jigger and pour into the chilled mule mug.

  3. 3

Add 0.5 oz freshly squeezed lime juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup to the mug.

  4. 4

Fill the mug with cracked or crushed ice, leaving about 1/2–3/4 inch of headspace for the ginger beer.

  5. 5

Top with 4 oz chilled ginger beer. Pour gently over the back of a bar spoon if you want to preserve effervescence.

  6. 6

Give the drink one gentle stir with a bar spoon (3–4 revolutions) to integrate vodka, lime and ginger beer without flattening the carbonation.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 7

If using mint: clap or lightly slap the mint sprig between your hands to release the aromatics, then tuck it into the side of the mug so the aromatic leaves sit above the drink.

  2. 8

Garnish the rim with a lime wheel or wedge. Optionally skewer a piece of candied ginger and rest it across the top for an extra spicy-sweet accent.

  3. 9

Serve immediately with a short straw or simply present in the mug. Encourage the guest to smell the mint before sipping for the full 'melting pot' aromatic experience.

Equipment

  1. 10

If you chilled the mug in the freezer, remove it just before building the drink. If you used ice to chill, dump that ice and then build the cocktail with fresh cracked/crushed ice for best dilution control.

  2. 11

Use the jigger for accurate measuring and the bar spoon for gentle stirring; a muddler is optional only if you prefer a more prominent mint aroma (lightly muddle one small sprig in the bottom of the mug before adding ice).
