Milk Preparation

Method

Milk Preparation

1

Inspect and measure

Check the milk for freshness (smell and use-by date). Measure 4 cups of whole milk into a clean measuring cup or directly into the pot or saucepan you'll use.

2

Heat or chill (choose based on use)

For cold milk: pour the measured milk into a clean pitcher, cover, and refrigerate until chilled (at least 30 minutes). For warm milk: pour milk into a small saucepan and warm over low to medium-low heat, stirring gently, until it reaches about 140°F (60°C) — it should be steaming and warm but not boiling. Remove from heat immediately once at temperature.

3

Optional thinning

If you want to slightly thin the milk (for baby formula preparation or a lighter consistency), add up to 1/4 cup water and stir to combine. Adjust to taste.

4

Season lightly (optional)

If using salt, stir 1 teaspoon into the milk to enhance flavor. This is optional and is typically used in some recipes rather than for drinking.

Flavoring (optional)

5

Sweetened vanilla milk

If making flavored milk, add 2 tablespoons sugar or honey and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the milk while it is warm (or to cold milk and whisk until dissolved). Stir thoroughly until the sweetener is fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness or vanilla as desired.

6

Chocolate milk

For chocolate milk, mix 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon sugar (or to taste) and a small splash (1–2 tbs) of warm milk to make a smooth paste. Whisk the paste into the rest of the cold or warm milk until fully combined and smooth. Chill or serve immediately over ice if desired.

7

Serving

Pour milk into glasses and serve cold, over ice, or warm. Store any unused milk in the refrigerator in a sealed container and use within 3–5 days according to the milk's original expiration date and refrigeration guidelines.
