Espresso

Optional

Method

Espresso

1

Prepare machine and dose

Preheat the espresso machine group head and portafilter by running a blank shot or wiping with a hot towel. Weigh 18 g of freshly ground espresso coffee (medium-fine, slightly finer than drip) and distribute it evenly in a clean portafilter basket.

2

Tamp and brew

Tamp the grounds with consistent pressure (about 20–30 lb or firm) so the surface is level. Lock the portafilter into the machine and start extraction. Aim for a 36 ml espresso (double short shot) extracted in 25–30 seconds. Stop the shot when the volume/time target is reached. Pour the espresso into a pre-warmed cup (approx. 250–300 ml cup).

Hot Water

3

Heat 120 ml of filtered water to about 90–96°C (195–205°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit for 30–45 seconds. Pour the hot water into the pre-warmed cup first if you prefer a smoother crema, or pour it over the espresso if you prefer to preserve crema — both are acceptable. Add the 36 ml espresso to the 120 ml hot water to yield approximately a 156 ml Americano (adjust water to taste).

Optional Finishes

4

Add milk

If you want a lighter, creamier Americano, steam or heat 30 ml of milk and add to the cup. Stir gently to combine.

5

Sweeten or garnish

Add up to 1 tsp sugar or preferred sweetener, stirring until dissolved. Optionally, express a lemon peel over the cup and drop it in for a bright citrus note.
