Simple Lemonade Base

Garnish & Optional Flavors

Method

Simple Lemonade Base

1

Make simple syrup

In a heatproof measuring cup or small saucepan combine 3 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1 cup hot water (not boiling). Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved to create a simple syrup. Let it cool for 5 minutes.

2

Juice the lemons

If you haven't already, roll and firmly press whole lemons on the counter to loosen juices. Cut enough lemons to yield 1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4–6 medium lemons). Strain seeds and pulp through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher if you prefer a clearer lemonade.

3

Combine and adjust

To the pitcher with 1 cup fresh lemon juice add the cooled simple syrup. Stir to combine. Add 3 cups cold water and stir. Taste and adjust: if too strong, add more cold water 1/4 cup at a time; if too tart, add 1 tablespoon sugar or more simple syrup to taste.

4

Chill

Add 2 cups ice to the pitcher or chill in the refrigerator for at least 20–30 minutes until cold. Stir again before serving to ensure ingredients are well mixed.

Garnish & Optional Flavors

5

Prepare garnish: add lemon slices to the pitcher or to individual glasses. Clap or lightly bruise mint leaves between your palms to release aroma and either add to the pitcher or tuck into glasses. If using, grate 1 teaspoon lemon zest over the top for extra brightness.

6

Serve: pour lemonade into glasses over ice, garnish with a lemon slice and a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.
