Cocktail
Method
Cocktail
Prepare citrus and fruit
Cut the half lime into two wedges. Cut the quarter orange into two small wedges. Reserve one maraschino cherry for garnish; place the remaining cherry in the bottom of a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker.
Muddle
Add the lime and orange wedges to the glass/shaker with the maraschino cherry and optional simple syrup. Using a muddler, press and twist 6–8 times—enough to release the oils from the orange peel and the juice from the citrus and to crush the cherry lightly without pulverizing the pith.
Add spirits and juice
Pour the vodka and cherry juice into the glass or shaker. Stir briefly (4–6 seconds) to combine and lift the muddled fruit bits into the liquid.
Assemble the mule
Fill a mule mug or highball glass with crushed ice (or cubed ice). Strain the vodka–cherry mixture over the ice, allowing some small fruit pieces to pass through for texture.
Top and finish
Top the drink with chilled ginger beer (about 4 oz). Gently stir once or twice to marry the ingredients without flattening the ginger beer's carbonation.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with the reserved maraschino cherry and a mint sprig (if using). Optionally, express a lime wedge over the top for extra aroma and drop it into the drink. Serve immediately with a straw or sipping directly from the mug.
