Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

If desired, chill a coupe or martini glass by filling it with ice water and setting it aside while you build the drink.

  2. 2

Add vodka, Bénédictine, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup (if using), and Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker.

  3. 3

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

Dump the ice water from the chilled glass (if you chilled it). Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass filled with fresh ice, using a fine mesh strainer if available to remove small ice shards and pulp.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 5

Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down over the glass and giving it a quick snap so the essential oils spray across the surface. Rub the twist around the rim and drop it into the drink, or float a grapefruit wheel on top.

  2. 6

Optional: For a flamed grapefruit peel, warm the peel slightly, hold a lighter flame between the peel and the cocktail while squeezing so a brief burst of oils flames and adds aroma — exercise caution and do this only if experienced.

  3. 7

    Serve immediately.
