Cocktail Base

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or a cocktail shaker without ice, measure and pour 2 oz cognac, 1 oz sweet red vermouth, 0.25 oz Green Chartreuse, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Add a large handful of ice (or 2–3 large ice cubes) to the mixing glass. Stir gently and steadily for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is thoroughly chilled and slightly diluted. Do not shake — this is a spirit-forward stirred cocktail.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Remove your chilled glass from the freezer or discard the ice water and dry the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down 2–3 inches above the cocktail and giving it a sharp twist, then rub the peel around the lip of the glass and drop it (or lay it) in the drink. Optionally, add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick.

Service Notes

  1. 7

Serve immediately. This cocktail is spirit-forward with herbal complexity from the Chartreuse and botanical sweetness from the vermouth and curaçao. Sip slowly to appreciate the evolving flavors.

  2. 8

If you prefer a slightly lighter drink, increase the vermouth to 1.5 oz or reduce the cognac to 1.5 oz and adjust stirring time slightly to account for greater dilution.
