Coffee Shot
- 1
Prepare coffee
Measure 18 g of freshly ground espresso coffee. If using an espresso machine: distribute grounds evenly in the portafilter, tamp firmly and evenly. If using a Moka pot or AeroPress: use the same weight of coffee and prepare according to manufacturer's instructions to yield roughly 30–40 ml of concentrated brew.
- 2
Brew the espresso aiming for 30–40 ml of liquid in about 25–30 seconds (espresso) or equivalent concentrated extraction from other methods. Target a rich, syrupy shot with a thin crema.
- 3
Pour the shot directly into a warmed shot glass or demitasse to preserve temperature and aroma.
Sweetener & Flavor
- 4
Stir in 10 ml simple syrup while the shot is still hot so it dissolves fully. If using vanilla extract, add 2 ml and stir to incorporate. Taste quickly — this is a small concentrated drink so a little goes a long way.
Finishing & Garnish
- 5
Froth 15 ml chilled cream or milk lightly using a small frother or whisk until you have a silky microfoam. The foam should be just enough to float a thin layer on the shot.
- 6
Gently spoon or pour the microfoam over the sweetened espresso so it creates a thin, velvety top layer. Alternatively, for a sharper contrast, pour the cream slowly down the inner side of the shot glass.
- 7
Finish with a light dusting of grated dark chocolate or 1/2 tsp cocoa powder on top for aroma and visual appeal.
- 8
Serve immediately while hot. This concentrated 'shot' is meant to be sipped slowly or taken in one confident swallow, depending on preference.
Equipment Notes
- 9
If using a Moka pot: grind slightly coarser than espresso, fill the bottom with water, do not tamp the basket, and heat gently. Expect a slightly different flavor profile but similar concentration. If using AeroPress: use a fine grind, 1–1.25 ratio coffee to water by weight and press to yield 30–40 ml. Adjust syrup to taste if your brew is more or less bitter.
