Cocktail

1

Build the cocktail

Place 0.25 oz simple syrup (or Demerara syrup) into a mixing glass or Old Fashioned tumbler. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Add 0.25 oz water only if you prefer a slightly looser mouthfeel; otherwise omit.

2

Add whiskey and stir

Pour 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass. Add one large ice cube (or several large cubes). Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds (or 10–15 revolutions) to chill and dilute the drink to taste.

3

Strain and serve

If you built the drink in a mixing glass, strain into an Old Fashioned glass over one large ice cube. If you built it in the serving glass, simply leave the ice in place.

4

Garnish

Express the oils from an orange peel by holding it skin-side down over the glass and giving it a sharp twist; run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Optionally add a maraschino cherry.

5

Serve immediately. Estimated dilution from stirring should be approximately 15–20 ml depending on ice and time; adjust stirring time for desired strength.
