Cocktail
Prepare espresso
Brew a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz) and allow it to cool slightly. If you prefer to avoid heat and dilution, use 1 oz of cold-brew concentrate prepared ahead and chilled.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or shaker filled with ice, add 2 oz Bulleit rye, 1 oz cooled espresso (or cold-brew concentrate), 0.25 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes black walnut bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters (if using).
Stir and chill
Stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds with a bar spoon (or shake briefly if you prefer a slightly more aerated texture). Stirring yields a smoother, clearer cocktail; shaking will produce a light foam from the espresso.
Prepare glass
Place a large ice cube into an old-fashioned glass.
Strain and serve
Strain the cocktail over the large ice cube in the old-fashioned glass.
Garnish
Express an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm bend to release oils, then drop it in. Lightly sprinkle 1/4 tsp cracked coffee beans or finely grated dark chocolate on top if desired for aroma and presentation.
Final notes
Taste and adjust sweetness or bitters if needed: add another 1/8–1/4 oz simple syrup for more sweetness or an extra dash of black walnut bitters for pronounced nutty complexity. Serve immediately.
