Preparation

Cocktail

1. Chill glass

Place a coupe or large wine glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.

2. Build and chill

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, combine the rye whiskey, cherry liqueur, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. Add 3–4 large ice cubes and stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

3. Strain

Discard the ice or water from the chilled coupe/wine glass. Strain the stirred whiskey/liqueur mixture into the chilled glass using a Hawthorne or fine strainer.

4. Top with Cabernet

Carefully float or gently pour 6 oz Cabernet Sauvignon over the strained base. Pour slowly down the side of the glass or over the back of a spoon so the wine layers lightly with the whiskey mixture, creating a balanced texture.

5. Garnish and finish

Express the oils from the orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist. Rub the peel around the rim if desired, then drop the twist into the drink. Optionally, add a Luxardo cherry on a pick.

6. Serve

Serve immediately while chilled. Advise sipping slowly to enjoy how the wine and spirit interplay as the drink warms slightly.
