Equipment & Stones
Heat stones
Place Himalayan salt stones in the electric stone heater. Set heater to a gentle warming level (aim for 110–125°F / 43–52°C). Allow stones to warm for 30–45 minutes until they reach a comfortable, even warmth. Use the thermometer to verify surface temperature of several stones before use.
Prepare stones for treatment
Arrange warmed stones on a clean towel within easy reach on the therapist's side of the table. Keep a small bowl of warm water and clean cloth nearby to wipe stones between uses and to moderate temperature if necessary.
Safety check
Test each stone on your inner forearm before placing on the client to confirm comfortable temperature. Keep extra towels prepared to cover or remove heat if client reports discomfort.
Table & Client Prep
Prepare the massage table with clean linens and a face cradle cover. Fold two towels: one to support the client’s ankles and one for draping. Place a disposable face cradle cover or small towel on the cradle. Ensure room temperature is comfortable and soft lighting/music is set if desired.
Explain the treatment briefly to the client, including benefits and that heated salt stones will be used. Confirm any contraindications (high blood pressure, pregnancy, open wounds, skin conditions, heat sensitivity) and obtain verbal consent.
Topical products & Application
If using essential oils, combine the 6 drops of essential oil with the carrier oil (2 tbs) and then add to the main massage oil (0.5 cup). Mix thoroughly. This yields a lightly scented massage oil suitable for most skin types. Perform a quick patch test if the client has sensitive skin or unknown allergies.
Warm 2–3 tablespoons of the blended massage oil in your hands before starting contact. Keep the remainder nearby but not in the heater.
Treatment Sequence
Initial warming strokes
Have the client lie prone. With warmed hands and a lightly oiled palm, begin with broad, gentle effleurage (long gliding strokes) over the back to acclimate the client to your touch and the ambient warmth. Continue for 2–3 minutes.
Introductory stone placement
Place 2–4 larger warmed salt stones along the paraspinal muscles (one on each side of the spine) and at the base of the neck, taking care not to place directly on the spine. Keep stones in place for 2–4 minutes to provide deep, radiant heat that begins to relax muscles and open circulation. Monitor client comfort continuously.
Active stone massage
Remove one stone at a time and use it as a warmed massage tool. With a stone held in the palm, apply gliding strokes, broad circular motions, and gentle kneading to the shoulders, upper back, and lumbar region. Use stones with both flat and contoured faces to adapt to muscle shapes. Work each major area for 4–6 minutes, reapplying oil to the skin or stone if needed to maintain smooth gliding.
Alternate with hands
Interleave stone work with manual techniques: use forearm effleurage, thumb kneading, and gentle cross-fiber friction to address specific tight spots. Alternate every 3–5 minutes to maintain varied stimulation and ensure heat is not concentrated too long in one place.
Limb and extremity treatment
Use medium-sized stones to glide along each leg and arm with long strokes from proximal to distal, promoting circulation and lymphatic flow. Spend 3–4 minutes per limb. For hands and feet, use smaller stones for soothing strokes and gentle circular motions around joints.
Face, neck, and scalp (optional, gentle)
If included, use the coolest stones (or wrap a towel over the stone) and avoid direct pressure on delicate facial bones. Use gentle, feather-light gliding motions around the jawline, along the temples, and down the sides of the neck for 2–3 minutes total.
Final placements and grounding
Finish the massage with 2–4 warm stones placed gently along the back (avoiding the spine) and one stone over the abdomen if the client is comfortable. Leave stones in place for 2 minutes while performing light hand strokes on adjacent areas to integrate the work.
Closure
Remove all stones. Wipe any excess oil with a warm, damp cloth. Offer the client a few minutes to rest on the table before assisting them to a seated position. Provide a glass of water and brief aftercare advice (stay hydrated, avoid heavy exertion for the next 12–24 hours).
Aftercare & Cleaning
Clean stones after each use: when stones have cooled to a safe handling temperature, wipe them with a clean damp cloth and mild soap if needed, then dry thoroughly. Sanitize the heater and replace towels/linens per hygiene protocol.
Store stones in a dry, padded container or the heater unit between sessions to prevent chipping or contamination. Periodically inspect stones for cracks or damage; retire any compromised stones.
