Method
Preparation & Tools
Sanitize work surface and gather all tools and ingredients. Have 2–4 warm towels ready to rewarm as needed during treatment. Preheat a towel warmer or use a microwave (10–20 seconds) to warm towels; test temperature to ensure comfort.
Ask the client about topical sensitivities, allergies (arnica, eucalyptus, menthol, nuts), medication (blood thinners), and recent skin conditions. Do not proceed if client is allergic to arnica or on contraindicated medication without medical clearance.
Exfoliating Base
Mix exfoliant
In the small mixing bowl combine 1.5 cups fine sea salt and 0.5 cup fine sugar. Stir to distribute evenly. Add 0.5 cup almond oil and mix with spatula until a cohesive, slightly damp paste forms. Adjust with up to 2 tablespoons warm water if mixture feels too dry.
Check texture: it should be abrasive enough for deep exfoliation but not so dry that it scratches. Set bowl aside within reach of the massage table.
Arnica-Rich Gel & Active Blend
Prepare arnica active blend
In a separate small container transfer 3 tablespoons topical arnica gel and 1 tablespoon arnica-infused oil (if using). Add 1 teaspoon menthol gel only if the client tolerates cooling sensations. Add 6 drops cajeput or eucalyptus and 6 drops lavender essential oils, then 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil. Whisk or stir gently until uniform. Smell-check and confirm client comfort with the aroma.
Combine a portion of the arnica blend (start with 2–3 tablespoons) into the exfoliating base and fold in thoroughly so salt/sugar granules are coated with the arnica-rich medium. Reserve remaining arnica blend for targeted post-exfoliation application during the deeper massage.
Treatment — Exfoliation and Deep Tissue Massage
Initial warm compress
Place a warm towel over the areas to be treated for 1–2 minutes to relax tissue and open pores. Remove and lightly pat skin dry so it remains slightly damp.
Apply scrub
Using gloved hands or a clean towel, scoop a palmful of the scrub and apply to the client's body in working sections (legs, back, arms, torso). Use firm, rhythmic strokes: circular motions over muscles and long strokes along limbs. For areas of increased tension or scar tissue, use slightly firmer pressure and smaller circles. Keep movements steady and monitor client comfort.
Duration: spend 8–12 minutes total exfoliating, focusing 2–3 minutes per large area (each leg, back, shoulders). Reapply scrub as needed.
Rinse and pat
After exfoliation is complete, remove the scrub with warm wet towels or have the client shower if facility allows. Ensure all granules are removed. Pat skin gently; leave slightly damp.
Targeted arnica application
Warm the reserved arnica blend between your palms and apply a generous layer to areas of inflammation, knots, or recent soft tissue injury (avoid broken skin). Use firm, deeper effleurage and friction techniques to work the gel into tissue, applying progressive pressure to penetrate deeper layers. Spend 10–15 minutes performing deeper massage strokes over each problem area.
Soothing Finish
Blend finish balm: combine 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil or softened shea butter with 2 tablespoons pure aloe vera gel. If needed, add 1–2 tablespoons warm water to reach a light, spreadable consistency. Warm between palms.
Apply finishing balm over treated areas with calming long strokes to soothe skin and lock in moisture. Use light to moderate pressure and finish with gentle percussion or feathering strokes to restore circulation.
Cover treated areas with a warm towel for 1–2 minutes, then remove. Offer water and advise client to avoid hot showers, vigorous exercise, or direct sun exposure for 12–24 hours if significant arnica or cooling agents were used.
Dispose of single-use items, launder towels, and document treatment details (areas treated, products used, any adverse reactions).
