Method
Pre-cleanse & Tools
Sanitize hands and set out tools: cotton pads, towel, and timer. Ensure client or user has no contraindications (open wounds, active cold sores, recent retinoid use, aspirin allergy if using enzymatic products with botanical extracts).
Remove makeup and surface oil. Saturate 1–2 cotton pads with micellar water or oil cleanser and gently wipe entire face and neck until pads come away mostly clean. Pat skin dry with a soft towel.
Enzyme Exfoliation Mask
Mixing the mask
In a sanitized bowl, combine papaya enzyme powder (1 tsp) and pineapple enzyme powder (1/2 tsp) with kaolin clay (1 tsp). Stir to distribute powders evenly. Add plain yogurt (1 tbs) or aloe gel (for sensitive skin), hyaluronic serum (1/2 tsp), honey (1/2 tsp), and distilled water or rose hydrosol (1/2 tsp). Mix to a smooth, spreadable paste—thickness should be like a thick yogurt. If skin is very sensitive, omit the pineapple enzyme and reduce papaya to 1/2 tsp.
Patch test (essential)
Apply a pea-sized amount of the prepared mask to the inside of the wrist or behind the ear. Wait 5–10 minutes. If any burning, intense stinging, redness beyond mild pinkness, itching, or swelling occurs, remove immediately with cool water and do not proceed. For safe in-spa use, perform a 24-hour patch test the first time.
Application
With clean fingers or a sanitized spatula, apply a thin, even layer of the enzyme mask to the dry, cleansed face and neck, avoiding the immediate eye area and lips. Start at the t-zone and spread outward. Do not apply to broken skin, active acne cysts, or open lesions.
Timing & monitoring
Set the timer for 5–10 minutes depending on skin tolerance and product strength: 5 minutes for sensitive or thin skin, 7 minutes for normal skin, up to 10 minutes for resilient/oily skin. Monitor the client’s comfort—mild warming or tingling is normal. If the sensation becomes sharp, burning, or intensely itchy, remove the mask immediately.
Neutralizer & Soothing Rinse
Rinse technique
When time is up (or sooner if irritation occurs), gently remove the mask by first moistening the mask with cool chamomile or green tea infusion (about 1–2 tbs) and then softening with the optional baking soda solution if a neutralizer is desired (use only if skin tolerated enzymes and there is a desire to fully neutralize acidity). Use a soft, damp cloth or cotton pads to wipe thoroughly until no residue remains.
Pat the skin dry with a clean towel. If any redness or sensitivity is present, apply cool chamomile infusion compresses for 2–3 minutes to calm the skin.
Post-treatment Hydration & Protection
Hydrate and restore
Spritz or apply gentle hydrating toner or rose hydrosol (2 tbs) to rebalance pH and add moisture. Pat in anti-inflammatory serum (niacinamide 0.5 tsp or calming peptide serum) across face and neck. Allow serums to absorb for 1–2 minutes.
Seal and protect
Apply a thin layer of rich moisturizer or barrier cream (1 tsp) to lock in hydration and support barrier repair. If treatment is performed during the day, finish with mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+, 1 tsp) applied evenly to face and neck after moisturizer has absorbed.
Provide aftercare instructions: avoid direct sun exposure and heat (sauna, hot yoga) for 24–48 hours; skip active exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs, retinoids) for at least 72 hours; use gentle cleansers and hydrating products and monitor for prolonged redness or irritation—if present, contact a professional.
