Preparation & Client Comfort
Prepare the space
Warm the treatment room to a comfortable temperature (about 24–26°C / 75–79°F). Lay clean towels on the treatment table, position a pillow or rolled towel for head support, and have plastic wrap, thermal blanket, and timer within reach.
Ask the client to remove clothing as appropriate and provide disposable undergarments or modesty cover. Ensure client privacy and explain the steps, expected sensations (warming, mild tightening), and duration.
Mud Base & Active Ingredients (for one full-body wrap / 1 client)
Mix the mud
In a non-metal bowl, combine the bentonite clay and warm distilled water. Stir with a wooden or plastic spatula until a smooth, lump-free paste forms. Add the unrefined sea salt and aloe vera gel; mix thoroughly to maintain a spreadable consistency (like thick yogurt). If using activated charcoal, whisk it in now until evenly distributed.
Add carrier oil, vitamin E oil, and the essential oil blend. Stir slowly until fully incorporated. Test the temperature on your inner wrist; the mixture should be warm but not hot (about skin temperature). Adjust with a little more warm water or clay to reach the desired spreadability.
Client positioning & skin check
Have the client lie on the towels and make sure they are comfortable and covered with modesty drape. Perform a quick skin check for any contraindications (open wounds, sunburn, allergies to ingredients). Confirm they have no contraindicated medical conditions (pregnancy, heart conditions, uncontrolled hypertension) or have clearance from their provider if required.
Remove modesty cover from the area you'll work on first (commonly legs and torso) and keep other areas covered to maintain warmth and client comfort.
Application
Using gloved hands or a spatula, apply a 1/8–1/4 inch (3–6 mm) even layer of the mud paste to the first area (e.g., legs). Smooth the mud in long strokes toward the heart to follow lymphatic flow. Continue applying to remaining areas (back, abdomen, arms, neck) until the whole targeted area or full body is covered, leaving face and sensitive areas clear unless specifically requested and suitable.
Once application is complete, wrap the treated area with plastic wrap to seal and retain warmth. If doing a full-body wrap, wrap limbs individually then the torso. Cover the wrapped client with the thermal blanket for insulation.
Wrap timing & monitoring
Set the timer for 30–45 minutes (30 minutes for first-timers or sensitive skin, up to 45 for deeper treatment). Check on the client at 10–15 minute intervals: ensure they feel comfortable, not overheated, and have no adverse reactions. Offer sips of water if needed and adjust room temperature or blankets as required.
Rinse & Aftercare
Removal & rinse
When time is up, carefully remove the thermal blanket and plastic wrap. Using warm water and a soft towel or in-shower, gently wipe away the mud starting from the extremities and moving toward the heart. Use the gentle body cleanser if needed to remove residue. Ensure water temperature remains comfortable for the client.
Pat the skin dry lightly with clean towels; do not rub aggressively as skin may feel sensitive.
Moisturize & finish
Apply a light hydrating lotion or a small amount of body oil evenly across treated areas to replenish moisture. If desired, mist the skin lightly with herbal calming spray. Offer the client water and a few minutes to rest before getting up.
Dispose of single-use items and sanitize reusable equipment and surfaces according to spa sanitation protocols.
