1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or old-fashioned glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

2

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz cognac, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 0.25 oz fresh lemon juice and 2 dashes Angostura bitters into a mixing glass or shaker.

3

Add ice and stir

Add 4 ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Prepare glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump the water or remove the glass from the freezer and discard any ice.

5

Strain and garnish

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled glass using a julep or fine strainer to catch small shards of ice. Express a lemon twist over the drink (pinch the peel to release oils), rub the peel briefly around the rim, then drop it in as garnish.

6

Serve immediately. Sip neat to appreciate the cognac’s flavors with the balancing sweetness and citrus.
