Float components

Method

Prepare glass and ice cream

1

Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer an extra-cold float, place the glass in the freezer for 10–15 minutes or fill it with the 4 ice cubes and let sit while you scoop the ice cream; discard ice before assembling if you used it to chill.

2

Scoop ice cream

Using a scoop or large spoon, place 3 rounded scoops of vanilla ice cream into the chilled glass. Arrange the scoops so they sit slightly above the rim to create space for effervescence and an attractive float.

Assemble the float

3

Hold the glass at a slight angle and slowly pour 12 fl oz of chilled root beer down the inside of the glass so it runs along the glass wall and reduces excessive foaming. Pour gradually until the foam rises near the top but without overflowing.

4

If the foam threatens to overflow, pause briefly to let it settle, then continue pouring until the root beer reaches just below the rim and the ice cream is partially submerged.

Finish & serve

5

Top with 2 tablespoons of whipped cream if using, and place a maraschino cherry on top of the whipped cream or directly on the ice cream.

6

Insert a long-handled spoon or straw and serve immediately so the ice cream and root beer are enjoyed at their best texture.
