Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

1

Prepare bacon

Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top if available. Arrange 6 bacon slices in a single layer on the rack. Bake 12–18 minutes, until crisp to your preference. Remove and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Alternatively, pan-fry over medium heat 8–10 minutes, turning once. Keep warm.

2

Toast bread

Butter one side of each of the 6 bread slices (optional) and toast in a skillet over medium heat or in a toaster until golden and crisp. If using skillet, toast 2–3 minutes per side. Set the toasted slices on a cutting board, buttered-side up.

3

Prepare tomato and lettuce

Wash and dry lettuce leaves; pat dry and tear or trim to fit bread. Slice the tomato into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Lightly season tomato slices with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper, distributing evenly.

4

Assemble condiments

In a small bowl, mix 4 tbs mayonnaise with 2 tsp mustard (adjust to taste). Spread about 1 tbs of the mayo-mustard mixture on one side of four toasted bread slices (these will be the inner layers) and about 1/2 tbs on the remaining two slices for outer surfaces.

5

Layer the sandwich - first stack

Place one mayo-spread toast slice on the work surface mayo-side up. Top with 2 slices of turkey (overlap slightly), then 1 slice of Swiss cheese, then 2 strips of bacon, and 1 lettuce leaf. Press gently to level.

6

Layer the sandwich - middle slice

Place a second toasted slice on top of the first stack, mayo-side down. On top of this middle slice spread the mayo-mustard side up, then add 2 more turkey slices, 1 slice of American cheese, tomato slices (2–3 rounds), and another lettuce leaf. Season tomato again lightly if desired.

7

Layer the sandwich - final stack

Top with a third toasted slice, mayo-side down, then spread a thin layer of mayo on the top of that slice and add the final 2 turkey slices, remaining Swiss cheese slice, and the last 2 bacon strips. Finish with the final toasted slice, mayo-side down (buttered side out if used).

8

Press and rest

Gently press the stacked sandwich to compact slightly and help it hold together. If desired, insert toothpicks through each quarter to secure.

9

Cut and serve

Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich diagonally into quarters (or halves) so each portion contains all layers. Serve immediately while bacon is warm and bread is crisp. Provide extra mayonnaise or mustard on the side if desired.
