Method
Prep
- 1
Preheat and prep
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). If you prefer a toasted interior, split the 8-inch Italian loaf lengthwise and lightly butter the cut surfaces; set on a baking sheet. Finely dice green pepper, onion, and slice mushrooms into approximately 1/4-inch pieces.
Cook Vegetables
- 2
Heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and cook 2–3 minutes until starting to soften. Add green pepper and mushrooms, season with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper, and cook another 3–4 minutes until vegetables are tender-crisp and mushrooms release moisture. Transfer vegetables to a bowl and set aside.
Cook Beef
- 3
In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and warm over medium-high. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula. Sprinkle Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, 3/4 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper over the beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until beef is browned and cooked through (6–8 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary.
- 4
Stir the cooked vegetables back into the browned beef until combined. Reduce heat to low and simmer together 1–2 minutes to meld flavors. Remove skillet from heat.
Assemble & Bake
- 5
If toasting the loaf, place the buttered cut sides cut-side-up on the baking sheet and toast in the preheated oven 3–5 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven.
- 6
Spread 1/2 cup pizza sauce evenly over the cut surface of the bottom half of the loaf. Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture over the sauce, distributing evenly. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly on top, then dust with grated parmesan and a light sprinkle of dried oregano or Italian seasoning.
- 7
Place the assembled loaf back in the oven and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 6–9 minutes, or until cheese is fully melted and edges of the bread are crisp. For a browned top, switch oven to broil and broil 1–2 minutes while watching closely.
Finish & Serve
- 8
Remove from oven and let rest 2 minutes. Slice the 8-inch loaf into 3–4 thick sandwiches or 6 smaller pieces, depending on preferred serving size. Serve hot.
