Sandwich

Method

Prepare Bread & Spread

  1. 1

    Split roll and apply spreads

Slice the 8-inch roll horizontally through the middle, keeping a hinge if desired. Spread the softened butter evenly on the outer faces (top and bottom) of the roll. On the inside surfaces, spread the mayonnaise on one half and the Dijon mustard on the other half. Sprinkle the inside surfaces lightly with the freshly ground black pepper.

Assemble Sandwich

  1. 2

    Layer ham and cheese

On the bottom half of the roll, arrange the 6 oz of sliced deli ham in an even layer. If slices are large, fold them to fit and create some thickness. Top the ham with 3 slices of American cheese placed to cover most of the ham. Reserve 1 cheese slice for the top half if you prefer extra cheese.

Heat & Melt

  1. 3

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the assembled open-faced sandwich (bottom half with ham and cheese) on a baking sheet. Place the top half, buttered-side up, on the sheet as well. Slide the sheet into the middle rack and bake for 6-8 minutes until cheese is melted and ham is heated through. Close the sandwich by placing the top half over the melted cheese, pressing gently.

  2. 4

    Stovetop skillet method (faster)

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich closed (butter outside) in the skillet and weigh it lightly with a heavy pan or sandwich press. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Use medium heat to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.

Finish & Serve

  1. 5

Remove the sandwich from the oven or skillet and let it rest 1 minute. Slice in half on the diagonal if desired and serve hot. Optionally, add a pickle spear or potato chips on the side.
