Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Place a large chilled Old Fashioned glass (rocks glass) in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail. If using, have a single large ice cube or sphere ready.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz demerara syrup (or simple syrup), 3 dashes Angostura bitters, and 2 dashes orange bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Stir gently but thoroughly for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (target about 20–25°F drop and roughly 15–20% dilution).

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and garnish

Discard the chilling ice or water from the Old Fashioned glass. Place the large ice cube or sphere into the chilled glass. Express an orange peel over the glass by holding it skin-side down and giving it a sharp twist to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim briefly.

  5. 5

    Strain and finish

Strain the mixed cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared glass over the large ice cube. Place the expressed orange peel on the rim or drop it into the drink. Optionally add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a cocktail pick and rest it on the ice.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the aroma and the balance of bourbon, bitters, and rich demerara sweetness.
