Cocktail

Method

Prep

1

Chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail. Gather a mixing glass, bar spoon, jigger and a strainer.

Mixing

2

Fill the mixing glass about three-quarters full with ice (approximately the amount listed under ingredients).

3

Measure 2 oz rye whiskey into the mixing glass using a jigger.

4

Add 1 oz sweet vermouth to the mixing glass.

5

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters directly into the mixing glass.

6

Optional: add a small dash (about 1/4 tsp) of Luxardo or maraschino liqueur for extra cherry depth if desired.

7

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full rotations), until well-chilled and lightly diluted. The drink should feel very cold to the mixing glass.

Finish & Serve

8

Discard the ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Place a julep strainer (or Hawthorne) over the mixing glass and strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass.

9

Garnish with 1 maraschino cherry on a pick, dropping it into the drink or skewering and resting it on the rim.

10

Optional: express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel over the glass and giving it a quick twist, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink if desired.

11

Serve immediately. Typical Manhattan serving yields 1 cocktail.
