Select a clean tulip (non-tapered pint) glass. The glass should be free of soap residue, grease or visible imperfections. Hold it up to light to check clarity.

Choose and inspect glass

If desired, rinse the glass with cold water (not ice water). Tilt the glass while swirling a small amount of cold water to wet the inside; pour out excess. Do not over-chill the glass — a slightly cool glass helps maintain head but avoids excessive foaming.

Optional: Wipe the rim with a lemon wedge only if the glass has any residual oil or film. Do not leave citrus in the glass.

Hold the glass at a 45-degree angle about 1–2 inches from the tap nozzle (for keg) or hold the can upright if using a can. For cans, ensure the nitrogen widget is intact; for kegs, confirm the tap is clean and dispensing properly.

Position the glass

Open the tap fully (or tilt and pour from the can) and aim the stream at the inside of the glass about halfway down the side while keeping the 45-degree angle. Fill until the beer reaches about three-quarters (3/4) of the way up the glass. This initial surge allows the nitrogen to form the characteristic cascading effect.

Begin the pour

Stop the pour and place the glass on the bar or a flat surface. Allow the beer to settle undisturbed for 90–120 seconds. You will see the roast-colored beer cascade down and form a dense, creamy head. Do not disturb the glass while settling.

Settle

When the settling is complete and the head has risen to about a finger's width (or slightly more), hold the glass upright and top up by pouring into the center so the head finishes domed slightly above the rim without spilling. For keg pours, open the tap briefly to top; for cans, pour gently.

Top up

Wipe any spill from the rim and present the pint with the Guinness harp facing the drinker (if applicable).

Serve immediately. Guinness is best enjoyed at cellar temperature (about 6–8°C / 43–46°F). Sip to appreciate the creamy mouthfeel, roasted malt flavors and subtle bitterness.

If storing or serving multiple pints from a keg, keep the keg properly chilled and the lines clean to maintain pour quality.

Clean the glass after use: rinse immediately with warm water to remove oils and residue, then wash normally.
