Bloody Mix

Method

Bloody Mix

1

Combine base ingredients

In a medium mixing container, combine 2 cups tomato juice, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire, 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish, and 6 drops hot sauce. Whisk to blend thoroughly.

2

Season and finish

Add 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon celery salt, and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika. Taste and adjust heat or acidity: add more hot sauce for heat or lemon for brightness. Chill the mix in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes or add 1 cup ice and stir to cool immediately; strain out melted water if you chilled with ice before using in cocktails so the mix isn't diluted.

Spam & Garnish Preparation

3

Slice Spam

Remove Spam from the can and slice into 6 even slices (about 1/4-inch to 1/3-inch thick). Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

4

Crisp Spam

Heat 1 tablespoon neutral oil in a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add Spam slices (do not overcrowd) and fry 1.5–2.5 minutes per side until edges are deeply browned and crisp. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and blot any excess oil. For extra crispness, place on a wire rack in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 3–5 minutes.

5

Assemble Garnish Skewers

Thread 1 crisp Spam slice, then a green olive, then a ribbon of pickled daikon onto each cocktail pick. If pickled daikon strips are long, fold or roll them before skewering so they sit neatly. Set skewers aside at room temperature.

6

Prepare Glass Rim

Rub the cut edge of a rocks or Collins glass with a lime wedge (optional). Spread 1 teaspoon coarse salt on a small plate and dip the rim lightly to coat. Fill the glass with ice.

Cocktail Construction

7

Add 2 ounces Haku vodka and 4 ounces prepared bloody mix into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass filled with ice (about 1 cup). Stir vigorously for 15–20 seconds to chill and slightly dilute, or briefly shake if you prefer a slightly frothier texture.

8

Strain the cocktail into the prepared ice-filled glass. Pour gently to keep the drink crisp and avoid splashing over the rim.

9

Garnish by placing the Spam / olive / daikon skewer across or into the glass. If desired, add an extra olive on a small pick and nest it beside the main garnish. Serve immediately with a lime wedge on the side.
