Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass and aromatics

Place 2 tsp granulated sugar and 10 fresh mint leaves in a sturdy highball glass. Pour 22 ml fresh lime juice over the sugar and mint.

  2. 2

    Muddle

Gently muddle the mint, sugar, and lime juice 6–8 times just to dissolve the sugar and bruise the mint leaves to release oils. Avoid over-muddling (do not shred the leaves) to prevent bitterness.

  3. 3

    Add rums

Pour 30 ml Don Q Cristal and 30 ml Bacardi Superior into the glass over the muddled mint mixture.

  4. 4

    Add ice

Fill the glass with about 1.5 cups of crushed ice, packing it lightly so the drink chills quickly and the mint distributes through the drink.

  5. 5

    Mix

Using a long bar spoon, stir vigorously for 10–15 seconds from top to bottom. This lifts the mint and mixes the rums, lime, and dissolved sugar evenly through the ice.

  6. 6

    Top with soda

Top the drink with 60 ml club soda (or to taste). Give one gentle up-and-down stir to integrate the soda without flattening the bubbles.

Garnish

  1. 7

    Finish and serve

Lightly clap the mint sprig between your palms to release its aroma and place it on top of the drink. Add a lime wheel to the rim or float it on top. Serve with a straw and enjoy immediately.
