Berry Syrup

Method

Berry Syrup

1

Combine berries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.

2

Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, and cook for 6–8 minutes until berries break down and mixture thickens slightly.

3

Mash the berries with a fork or a wooden spoon to release more juice and dissolve the sugar; simmer 1–2 more minutes.

4

Remove from heat, stir in the lemon juice, and let cool for 5 minutes.

5

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl or jar, pressing on solids to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard solids or reserve for another use.

6

Chill the syrup in the refrigerator until cold. Syrup can be stored up to 1 week in an airtight container.

Cocktail

7

Build and Shake

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add vodka (or rum), 1 oz chilled buzzed berry syrup, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer sweeter.

8

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the mixture is well combined.

9

Strain and Top

Fill a highball or Collins glass with fresh ice (about 1 cup). Strain the shaken cocktail into the glass.

10

Top with 2 oz club soda and gently stir once to integrate without losing too much fizz.

11

Garnish

Slap the mint leaves between your palms to release aroma and place on top. Skewer the fresh berries and rest on the rim or float them in the drink.

12

Taste and adjust: add up to 0.25 oz additional simple syrup if more sweetness is desired, or a squeeze more lemon for brightness.
