Cocktail
Muddle basil
In a cocktail shaker, place 6 fresh basil leaves. Gently clap one leaf between your palms to release aroma and add to the shaker. Using a muddler, press and twist the basil leaves 6–8 times — just enough to bruise and release oils without shredding to avoid bitterness.
Add liquids and ice
Add 2 oz vodka, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz ginger syrup, and 0.25 oz simple syrup (if using) into the shaker with the muddled basil. Add about 1 cup of ice to the shaker.
Shake
Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is well chilled (firm, cold to the touch) and the ingredients are well combined.
Prepare glass
Fill a rocks glass with 0.5 cup fresh ice (or a large ice cube).
Double-strain and pour
Double-strain the contents of the shaker into the prepared rocks glass using a hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (this removes basil solids and tiny ice shards).
Top (optional)
If you prefer a lighter, slightly effervescent drink, top with 1 oz club soda and gently stir once to combine.
Garnish
Garnish with a fresh basil sprig and a lemon wheel or twist. Clap the basil sprig gently between your hands before placing it on the drink to release its aroma for an inviting herbaceous nose.
