Bread (choose one)

Optional spreads & toppings

Method

Prepare bread

1

Select bread

Choose the type of bread you prefer (white, rye, whole wheat, or gluten-free). Use 1–2 slices per person depending on appetite. If slices are thick, one slice may be sufficient.

2

If using refrigerated or slightly stale bread, let it sit at room temperature for 5–10 minutes to take the chill off for more even toasting.

Toast bread

3

Using a pop-up toaster

Place bread slices in toaster slots. Set toaster to desired darkness (light to medium recommended for most breads). Toast until golden and crisp, typically 1.5–3 minutes depending on toaster and bread thickness. Remove carefully.

4

Using a stovetop or skillet

Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. For plain toast, place bread directly in the dry skillet and press lightly with a spatula, toasting 1–2 minutes per side until golden. For buttered toast, spread 1/2 tbs butter or 1/2 tsp olive oil on one side of each slice and place buttered side down; cook 1–2 minutes until golden, then flip and toast 30–60 seconds. Remove from skillet.

5

Using an oven or broiler

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or set broiler on high. Arrange bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. For oven: bake 4–6 minutes, flip, and bake another 2–4 minutes until golden. For broiler: place 2–3 inches from heat and broil 30–60 seconds per side, watching carefully to avoid burning.

Apply spreads & toppings

6

Butter or oil

If you prefer buttered toast and used a pop-up toaster or oven, spread 1/2–1 tbs unsalted butter on the hot toast so it melts evenly. Alternatively drizzle 1 tsp olive oil and rub across the surface.

7

Jam or peanut butter

Spread 2 tsp jam or 2 tsp peanut butter across each slice with a knife to an even layer. Combine jam and peanut butter if desired.

8

Avocado toast

Mix 1/2 cup mashed avocado with 1/2 tsp lemon juice, 1/4 tsp sea salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper. Spread about 2–3 tbsp of the avocado mixture on each slice. Garnish with chopped fresh herbs and a pinch of red pepper flakes if using.

9

Honey option

Drizzle 1 tsp honey over buttered toast or over peanut butter for a sweeter finish.

Serve

10

Serve toast immediately while warm and crisp. Provide additional salt, pepper, jam, or honey on the side for guests to finish to taste. Leftover toasted slices are best eaten within 30 minutes; refrigerate unused bread or store un-toasted slices in a sealed bag.
