Brewed Coffee

Method

Brewed Coffee

1

Grind beans

Measure 0.06 cups (about 10–12 grams) of fresh whole coffee beans per 1 cup (240 ml) of water. Grind to the appropriate consistency for your brewing method: medium-fine for automatic drip or pour-over, coarse for French press, very fine for espresso. Use a burr grinder for most consistent results.

2

Heat water

Bring 1 cup (240 ml) of fresh cold water to the correct temperature: about 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds before brewing.

3

Brew

Use your chosen brewing method: - Pour-over/Drip: place a filter in the cone, add the ground coffee, wet the grounds with a small amount of hot water to bloom for 30 seconds, then slowly pour the remaining water in a steady spiral. Total brew time ~2.5–4 minutes. - French press: add grounds, pour hot water, stir gently, place lid and steep 4 minutes, then press slowly. - Espresso machine: tamp 7–9 grams (single shot) or 14–18 grams (double) of very finely ground coffee into the portafilter and pull a shot (~25–30 seconds). Adjust grind and dose to taste.

4

Serve

Immediately pour the brewed coffee into a pre-warmed cup to preserve temperature and flavor.

Optional Add-ins

5

Add 2 tbs of milk or cream and 1 tsp of sugar to the cup if desired. Stir until combined. If using flavored syrup, add 1 tsp and stir. Finish with a light dusting (0.25 tsp) of cinnamon or cocoa on top for garnish.

Equipment Notes

6

If using whole beans, grind immediately before brewing for best flavor. Clean equipment after use to avoid stale flavors. Adjust coffee-to-water ratio to preference; a common starting ratio is 1:16 by weight (coffee:water).
