Method
Base
Soften and combine
Place the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl. Add the sour cream and mayonnaise. Using a sturdy spatula or an electric mixer on low, beat until fully combined and smooth, about 1–2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Flavor Foundation
Prepare aromatics
Add the minced shallot, grated garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, chopped chives, and chopped parsley to the base mixture. Fold gently until evenly distributed. Mixing by hand preserves a slightly chunky, approachable texture; use the mixer briefly if you prefer ultra-smooth.
Seasoning & Heat
Season the dip with kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, smoked paprika, and hot sauce (or the chosen finely chopped pickled jalapeño). Taste and adjust: add up to 0.5 tsp more salt or a touch more hot sauce if you prefer more heat.
Optional Monthly Variation Mix-Ins (choose one)
Mediterranean — Roasted red pepper
Fold in 1/2 cup finely chopped roasted red peppers (drain well). This lends sweet, smoky brightness.
Autumn — Caramelized onion & thyme
Stir in 1/2 cup finely chopped caramelized onions and 1/2 tsp fresh thyme leaves for a mellow savory depth.
Winter — Smoked salmon & dill
Gently fold in 1/2 cup finely flaked smoked salmon and 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill; reduce added salt since salmon is salty.
Spicy — Roasted jalapeño & lime
Fold in 1/2 cup roasted, peeled, and finely chopped jalapeño plus 1 tsp fresh lime juice for pronounced heat and acidity.
Note: Only choose one monthly mix-in unless you want a composed mash-up. Make sure any mix-in is drained and cooled to avoid adding excess moisture.
Finish & Garnish
Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil, sprinkle the chopped toasted seeds or nuts and microgreens or extra herbs on top. Chill at least 30 minutes to let flavors marry (up to 24 hours). Bring to room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving for best texture and flavor.
Serve with sturdy crostini, pita chips, fresh vegetable sticks, or crackers. Leftovers keep 3–4 days refrigerated in an airtight container.
