Coffee Preparation
- 1
Measure beans
Weigh or measure coffee using a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio for a medium-strength cup similar to Starbucks' drip. Use 36 fl oz (about 1065 ml) of water total. That requires about 66 g coffee (approx. 0.44 cups). If you have whole beans, measure 0.44 cups of whole beans.
- 2
Grind
Grind the whole beans to a medium grind (similar to granulated sugar). Target about 2–3 seconds on a coarse blade grinder or a medium setting on a burr grinder to produce roughly 66 g ground coffee. If you already have pre-ground coffee use medium-ground coffee directly (0.44 cups).
- 3
Preheat and rinse
Heat filtered water to 200°F (93–96°C). Pour 8 fl oz of the hot filtered water through the empty drip brewer and paper filter to rinse the paper and preheat the carafe/brew basket. Discard the rinse water.
- 4
Add coffee to filter
Place the medium-ground coffee (66 g, ~0.44 cups) in the rinsed paper filter in the brew basket. Level the grounds so they are even for an even extraction.
- 5
Brew
Pour the remaining 28 fl oz of hot water (200°F / 93–96°C) into the machine's water reservoir or, if using a pour-over, pour in a slow, steady spiral ensuring even saturation. If using an automatic drip machine, start the brew cycle. Total contact/brew time should be about 4–5 minutes for a drip brewer. For pour-over, aim for a 3:30–4:30 minute total brew time.
- 6
Serve
Once brewing finishes, remove the filter basket and discard grounds. Pour the brewed coffee into cups. The finished yield should be approximately 32–34 fl oz of brewed coffee (accounting for absorption by grounds).
