Chili-Blackberry Tequila

Method

Chili-Blackberry Tequila

  1. 1

    Prepare chili

Slice the Fresno chili in half lengthwise. Remove seeds if you want less heat; keep seeds for more spice. Reserve one thin slice for garnish.

  2. 2

    Muddle

In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh blackberries and half of the sliced Fresno (about half of the chile halves). Muddle firmly until the berries are broken down and the chili releases its juices and oils (about 20–30 seconds).

  3. 3

    Build the drink

Add the tequila blanco, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker with the muddled mixture.

  4. 4

    Shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup), cap it, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy.

  5. 5

    Double strain

Double-strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove seeds and pulp. If you prefer a long drink, pour into a highball and top with 2 oz club soda, gently stir once.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

If using, wet the glass rim with lemon and dip lightly into coarse salt or Tajín for a spiced rim.

  2. 7

Garnish by placing the reserved thin Fresno slice on top of the drink and add a lemon wheel or wedge to the rim.

  3. 8

Serve immediately and advise drinkers that the cocktail has a spicy kick from the Fresno chili; they can remove the chili slice if they want to soften the heat as they sip.
