Method

Build & Serve

1

Chill glass

If desired, place a highball glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice and let sit while preparing ingredients to chill the glass.

2

Juice lemons

Measure and freshly squeeze enough lemons to yield 1 oz (about half a medium lemon). Strain seeds if necessary.

3

Combine base ingredients

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 1.5 oz Tennessee whiskey, 1 oz triple sec, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, and 0.5 oz simple syrup.

4

Shake

Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the outside is frosty. This chills and slightly dilutes the mixture.

5

Prepare glass

Discard any ice used to chill the glass. Fill the highball glass with fresh ice (about 1 cup cubed).

6

Strain & top

Strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass over the ice. Top with approximately 4 oz soda water for a drier lemonade or 4 oz lemon-lime soda for a sweeter, fizzier finish. Gently stir once with a bar spoon to combine.

7

Garnish & serve

Garnish with a lemon wheel or wedge on the rim and optionally a sprig of fresh mint. Serve immediately with a straw or short stirrer.
