Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice and cold water to chill while you prepare the drink.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 1 cup of ice, 2 oz tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz sweet Italian red vermouth, 0.25 oz Campari, 0.25 oz agave syrup and 2 dashes orange bitters.
Shake
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and well diluted.
Strain
Discard ice/water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass over one large ice cube, using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards.
Adjust sweetness
Taste and, if needed, add an extra 0.125–0.25 oz agave syrup to balance acidity, stir briefly if added.
Garnish
Express the orange twist over the drink to release oils, rub it on the glass rim if desired, and drop it into the drink. Float a lime wheel on the surface or clip it on the rim for presentation.
