Method
Cocktail
Prepare glass
Select a rocks glass or short stemmed wine glass. If you prefer chilled glassware, place the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes prior to building the drink.
Combine spirits
In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the bourbon (1 oz), orange liqueur (1/2 oz), fresh lemon juice (1/2 oz), simple syrup (1/4 oz), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.
Stir and chill
Stir the mixture in the mixing glass for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. If using a shaker, give it a brief shake (6–8 seconds) and then strain to remove small ice shards.
Assemble drink
Place a large ice cube (or fill the glass with ice) into the prepared rocks or wine glass. Strain the chilled bourbon mixture over the ice.
Float wine
Slowly pour the 6 oz of Decoy Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon (or chosen red wine) over the back of a spoon held just above the drink surface so the wine floats and layers gently on top of the spirit mixture. This creates a two-tone presentation and allows the wine to meld as you sip.
Garnish and finish
Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down near the surface and giving it a quick twist to release oils; rub the peel around the glass rim and drop as a garnish. Optionally add an extra dash of bitters on top. Serve immediately.
