Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it's well chilled.

2

Measure ingredients

Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into a mixing glass.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Stir gently and steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and silky.

4

Prepare glass

If you used ice water to chill the glass, dump it out now. Fine-strain or pour the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or martini glass.

5

Garnish and finish

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down and giving it a quick twist to release oils, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Add one Luxardo or brandied cherry as a garnish. Serve immediately.

Notes

Variations: Substitute bourbon for rye for a smoother, sweeter profile. Adjust vermouth ratio (1:1) or bitters (3 dashes) to taste. For a drier Manhattan, use dry vermouth instead of sweet and garnish with lemon twist.
