Mac & Cheese
1. Cook the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
2. Make the Cheese Sauce
In the same pot, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden, stirring constantly.
3. Add Milk and Cream
Gradually add the whole milk and heavy cream, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
4. Incorporate the Cheeses
Lower the heat and add the cheddar, Gruyere, Parmesan, and cream cheese to the pot. Stir until all the cheeses are melted and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and black pepper.
5. Combine Pasta with Sauce
Add the cooked elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is evenly coated.
6. Prepare the Topping
In a small bowl, mix the bread crumbs with a tablespoon of melted butter. This will create a crispy topping.
7. Assemble and Bake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and evenly sprinkle the bread crumb mixture on top. If desired, add buffalo chicken, grilled chicken, or bacon on top of the cheese layer.
8. Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
9. Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious Mac & Cheese!
