Meatballs
Tomato Sauce
Method
Preparing Meatballs
- 1
Mix Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- 2
Form Meatballs
Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about 1 inch in diameter and place them on a baking sheet.
- 3
Chill
Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and chill the meatballs in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Making Tomato Sauce
- 4
Sauté Onion and Garlic
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 6
Finish with Basil
Just before serving, stir in chopped fresh basil into the sauce.
Cooking Meatballs
- 7
Cook Meatballs
In a separate skillet or oven, cook the chilled meatballs over medium heat until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Alternatively, bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes.
- 8
Combine with Sauce
Once the meatballs are cooked, gently place them in the simmering tomato sauce. Let them cook together for an additional 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
