Place the bottle of Finca Alto Cantabria, Conde Valdemar Rioja Blanco in a refrigerator upright for at least 2–3 hours prior to serving. If short on time, submerge the bottle in an ice bucket filled with equal parts ice and cold water for 20–30 minutes until the bottle feels cold (approximately 8–12°C / 46–54°F).

Chill bottle

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator or ice bucket. Wipe the neck and foil with a clean cloth or the small bowl of water and a cloth to remove any condensation or dust. Using a waiter’s corkscrew or foil cutter, carefully remove the foil capsule to expose the cork or screw cap.

Prepare to open

If the wine has a screw cap, twist it open and discard the cap. If it has a cork, insert the corkscrew in the center of the cork and pull steadily to remove it. Avoid jerking motions to minimize sediment disturbance (Rioja Blanco is typically clear and not sediment-heavy).

Open bottle

Smell the wine briefly to ensure there are no off aromas (musty or vinegar). Rioja Blanco generally benefits from a few minutes of exposure to air; if the wine was very cold, let it sit in the open bottle for 5–10 minutes to develop aroma and flavor.

Check and breathe

Select appropriate white wine glasses and ensure they are clean and free of strong detergent aromas.

Pour a small tasting measure (about 30–60 ml) into a glass first and swirl gently to evaluate aroma, color, and clarity. Then, if satisfied, pour 120–150 ml servings for guests. Hold the glass by the stem to avoid warming the wine with your hand.

Garnish and accompaniments: offer lemon wedges on the side—most drinkers will not add lemon to Rioja Blanco, but a light squeeze can brighten the wine for those who prefer. Present light snacks such as olives, toasted almonds, or thin manchego slices that complement the wine’s profile (fresh acidity, stone fruit, citrus, and possibly subtle oak or honey notes depending on vintage and style).

Temperature notes: Serve Rioja Blanco at about 8–12°C (46–54°F). If too cold, the aromas and flavors will be muted; if too warm, the wine may taste flabby. If the bottle warms on the table, return to ice bucket briefly between pours.

Storage after opening: Recork the bottle with the original cork (inserted cork-end-first or cap replaced) or use a wine stopper. Refrigerate upright and consume within 3–5 days for best quality. Remove any air with a vacuum pump if available to extend freshness slightly.
