Espresso

Method

Espresso

1

Prepare machine and dose

Preheat the espresso machine and portafilter by running a blank shot or flushing hot water through the group head. Grind 18 g of coffee to a fine espresso grind and distribute evenly in the portafilter.

2

Tamp and extract

Tamp the ground coffee firmly and evenly. Lock the portafilter in the group head and extract a double espresso (approximately 60 ml) into a warmed cup or small pitcher. Aim for a 25–30 second extraction; adjust grind as needed.

Hot Water & Assembly

3

Heat water

Bring filtered water to near-boiling (90–96°C / 195–205°F). If using a kettle, let it sit 20–30 seconds after boiling to reach the temperature range.

4

Pre-warm cup

Pour a little hot water into the serving cup to warm it, swish briefly, then discard the rinse water.

5

Combine espresso and water (Traditional vs. Long-pull)

For a traditional Americano, pour the hot water (120 ml) into the warmed serving cup first, then gently add the extracted espresso (60 ml) on top to preserve crema. For a longer or Americano lungo, pour the espresso into the cup first and top with hot water. Stir gently to combine.

6

Adjust and serve

Taste and adjust with optional sugar or sweetener to taste (start with 1 tsp). Add milk or cream (about 15 ml) if desired. Serve immediately.
